Who is Equal Exchange?
Equal Exchange is a worker-owned co-operative founded in 1986 in West Bridgewater, Mass. “Our mission was to challenge the prevailing model of trade in the coffee industry and build an alternative. Our goal is to bring the coffee farmer and the coffee grower as close together as possible. Building those relationships gives us unparalleled control over the quality of the coffee and of the relationship that connects the coffee-drinker with the farmer. As the proponent of Fair Trade, we’re always trying to get more of the coffee dollar to the farmers, not scale up so that we have the leverage to pay them less”, states Co-President, Rob Everts.
